Three selected books show off Greek culture
Three books focussing on Greece — 'The Green Shore,' 'War Games' and 'Marianthe's Story, Painted Words and Spoken Memories' are the centerprice of the fourth installment of Coming Together in Skokie. | Joel Lerner~Sun-Times
SKOKIE — Three books have been selected to represent Greek culture as the centerpiece of the fourth annual Coming Together in Skokie program.
Authors will be making visits to discuss their works during different program sessions.
Library Director Carolyn Anthony said literature is an ideal way to understand a culture better.
“As soon as you get into a book,” she said, “you start thinking, ‘What if I were in that situation? What would it have been like to live in that time period?’ So right away you start putting yourself in the position of your characters and naturally you begin to understand more about their lives and their situation.”
Coming Together in Skokie’s three books offer literature for every age:
• “The Green Shore” is the debut novel from Natalie Bakopoulos. It explores the 1967 military coup in Greece, which opened doors to devastating brutality and repression for seven years. The story is about one family against the backdrop of a turbulent period.
• For 12-year-old Petros, World War II feels far away from his life in 1941 Greece. But in “War Games,” that distance disappears when the Germans invade his country. Neighbors become enemies. People begin to keep secrets. For the first time, Petros has the chance to prove himself to his older brother, Zola. The book is geared towards teenagers or young adults.
• In author Aliki’s picture book, “Marianthe’s Story: Painted Words and Spoken Memories,” Marianthe’s paintings help her to become less of an outsider as she struggles to adjust to a new language and a new school. She makes pictures to illustrate the history of her family, and eventually begins to decipher the meaning of words.
