Skokie store employee charged with fitting-room recordings

SKOKIE — An employee of Zara, a clothing store at Westfield Old Orchard, was charged with unauthorized video recording after he allegedly filmed customers in a fitting room inside the store.
Sergio Corona Jr., 20, of the 3700 block of Bernard Street, Chicago, attached a video camera to a clothing price tag so customers changing would not know they were being filmed, police said.
A customer discovered the camera and brought it to the attention of other employees, who did not know what the device was, police said. Corona’s supervisor contacted him after the device was identified as a camera, police said.
Police published the information about the Jan. 10 crime online as part of a new “Official Skokie Public Safety Bulletin” but have not yet released the crime report.
Corona told police he acted on his own after hearing other employees talk about clothing being stolen from inside the fitting rooms. He admitted to using the camera seven to 10 times during the past week to two weeks, at first for security reasons and then to view customers changing, police said.
Corona said he did not distribute the videos, according to police, but viewed them on his home computer and then deleted them.
Skokie police said they viewed several of the videos and victims who were recorded were at least partially clothed. The victims could not be identified as the recordings were all from the neck down, they said.
