Man buying car instead robbed of $5K at knifepoint in Evanston

A Skokie man who thought he was buying a car was instead robbed of thousands of dollars by two men with a knife Tuesday evening in Evanston.

The 29-year-old Skokie man went to Evanston to buy a car that he saw offered on a Craigslist.com ad, Evanston police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said.

The man was approached in the 900 block of Monroe Street about 5:30 p.m. by two men, one of whom had a knife, Parrott said.

The men stole $5,000 in cash from the victim, who had brought the money to buy the car, Parrott said.

The suspects were described as black men 18-23 years, about 5-foot-8 and 140 pounds, police said. Both were wearing gray hoodies.
