Renowned experts in the field of Bipolar Disorder gathered in Chicago on May 2, 2012 for the sixth annual Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation’s Chicago Medical Briefing Luncheon. Hosted at The Casino in Chicago, the Luncheon welcomed more than 165 friends and supporters eager to foster a better understanding of this medical illness of the brain.

The Luncheon commenced with FOX Chicago News contributor and Chicago Sun-Times columnist, Bill Zwecker, welcoming guests and thanking them for supporting this worthy cause. Joyce Sang, one of the Foundation’s co-founders, then proceeded to greet guests and share an update on the Foundation’s many stellar accomplishments. Joyce praised patrons of the Luncheon for their willingness to be a part of this critical dialogue about Bipolar Disorder – a testament that the stigma associated with this insidious medical illness is being eradicated. She went on to share the news that the Foundation will once again partner with The Chauncey and Marion D. McCormick Family Foundation to bring the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program (ADAP) to private and public high schools across the Chicagoland area this fall. ADAP educates high school teachers, counselors and parents about Depression and Bipolar Disorder and provides tools to help individuals identify these serious illnesses of the brain.

Following lunch, guests heard from a world-class panel of leading doctors in the field of Bipolar Disorder, including Karen L. Swartz, MD, Director of Clinical and Education Programs at The Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; Janet Wozniak, MD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Pediatric Bipolar Program, Clinical and Research Program in Pediatric Psychopharmacology at Massachusetts General Hospital; Andrew A. Nierenberg, MD, Co-Director of the Bipolar Clinic and Research Program, Associate Director of the Depression Clinical and Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, Director of the NIMH Bipolar Trials Network, Professor at Harvard Medical School; Barbara J. Mason, Ph.D., Pearson Family Professor, Committee on the Neurobiology of Addictive Disorders, Director of Laboratory of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Co-Director of Pearson Center for Alcoholism and Addiction Research at The Scripps Research Institute; and Ellen Frank, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology, Co-Director of the Pittsburgh Bipolar Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Dr. Ellen Frank moderated the panel discussion, which addressed a multitude of issues associated with Bipolar Disorder, before taking questions from attendees.

The sixth annual Chicago Medical Briefing Luncheon was co-chaired by Mamie Walton, Abby O’Neil, and Marla London.

Funds raised at the event will support the upcoming ADAP training in Chicago and further the Foundation’s mission of fostering awareness, understanding and research for early-onset Bipolar Disorder. Proceeds will also support the Foundation’s Quest For The Test™ - to find an empirical test for Bipolar Disorder so that early detection and intervention become a reality.
