The fourth annual Global Health Initiative benefit dinner of the Chicago Lake Shore Medical Associates was held Oct. 6 at the Peninsula Chicago. The featured keynote speaker was Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder, and newsman Bill Kurtis served as emcee. The event drew 203 attendees and raised more than $500,000.
The mission of the Global Health Initiative is to promote global health education, provide medical aid to resource-limited countries and encourage an interest in primary care medicine. Since August 2008, the GHI has funded more than 225 medical students for global health service in 23 low-resource countries around the world.
Medical students serve alongside faculty and local health care providers in subject areas such as primary care medicine; maternal, neonatal and child health; and HIV treatment; and are actively engaged in preventive medical education dealing with nutrition, the spread of infectious disease and the critical importance of clean water.
