Skokie man cited in 3-vehicle crash involving gas tanker in Niles

Four people were taken to an area hospital following a crash involving a gasoline tanker truck and two vehicles that occurred on the Park Ridge-Niles border.
The accident was reported just after midnight May 26 near Emerson Middle School in the westbound lanes of the 8300 block of Oakton Street in Niles.
Sgt. Robert Tornabene, of the Niles Police Department, said a Toyota Camry driven by a 64-year-old Skokie man crossed the center lane while eastbound on Oakton, striking a Honda Civic that was driving east. A gasoline tanker truck traveling behind the Honda then rear-ended the vehicle, Tornabene said.
No damage was reported to the tanker portion of the semi-trailer, the police sergeant said.
“There was no hazardous material that came out of it; there was no leak,” Tornabene said.
Though the crash occurred on the Niles side of Oakton Street, Park Ridge paramedics responded and with assistance from other emergency crews extricated a passenger from one of the damaged vehicles.
In all, four people were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, the Fire Department reported. Their injuries were largely non-incapacitating, Tornabene said.
Ambulances from the Niles and North Maine Fire Departments also responded.
The driver of the Toyota who allegedly caused the accident was ticketed for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Tornabene said.
