SKOKIE — A Waukegan man is wanted by Skokie police on charges of aggravated attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, obstruction of justice, driving with a revoked license and other traffic violations.
He fled from police at about 2:19 a.m. Sunday after he was pulled over on the 3200 block of Dempster Street, police said.
Police later identified the man as Charles Richard Jones, 27, of 2829 Waukegan Road, Waukegan. He was pulled over because he did not have a front license plate on the vehicle he was driving, police said.
When the police officer was in his squad car with Jones’ vehicle pulled over, the suspect put the car into drive and left the scene of the traffic stop. The squad car’s overhead lights were still activated at the time, police said.
Police said the officer followed the vehicle, which reached 76 mph as the driver traveled into Evanston and through the intersections of Dempster Street and Hartrey Avenue, the 1900 block of Dempster, and Dempster and Dodge Avenue. The lights at those intersections were red at the time, police said.
The pursuing officer said he saw damage to parked vehicles along the route that the suspect traveled. On the 1000 block of Florence Avenue in Evanston, police said, he found the vehicle had been abandoned and the driver had fled on foot.
Information inside the vehicle and a check of its registration provided police with information that the vehicle is owned by the suspect’s girlfriend, police said.
The case is still under investigation.
