Hundreds of gallons of gas stolen

More than 850 gallons of gas were taken after three gas pumps were pried open and wires were cut disconnecting credit card scanners between 9 p.m. Sept. 24 and 2 a.m. Sept. 25 at a Shell gas station on the 5000 block of Touhy Avenue.

Police said cutting the credit card scanner wires allowed the suspect or suspects to take the gas without it registering inside that the pumps were being used.

Police said a Shell gift card was swiped several times to allow the gas to be pumped. Notes were later found stuck on the gas pumps with gum, but it was unknown what they said, police said.

Damage to the pumps was estimated at $387. The value of the gas taken was not reported, but with gas being well over $4 a gallon, it had to be close to $3,500, police said.
