SKOKIE — A 68-year-old bicyclist died early Friday after being struck by a vehicle while riding between stopped cars in Skokie.

The accident happened about 6:43 p.m. Thursday at Main Street and Skokie Boulevard, according to Skokie Police Officer Joe Marzigliano.

The cyclist was Robert McKenny of the 8600 block of Niles Center Road in Skokie, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

McKenny was riding westbound across Skokie Boulevard between stopped cars, Marzigliano said.

A car that was headed south on Skokie Boulevard tried to avoid hitting the bicycle “and in doing so, hit a light pole” in addition to the bicycle, Marzigliano said. The 30-year-old driver was uninjured, he said.

McKenny was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

No alcohol or drugs were believed to be a factor in the crash and according to a preliminary investigation, the bicyclist was at fault, Marzigliano said.

No charges or citations had been issued as of Friday morning, but the investigation was continuing, he said.
