Police believe bones found inside a car pulled out of the Chicago River on Saturday might belong to a long-missing Lincolnwood man.
Authorities pulled a car out of the river about noon that matches a vehicle Michael Jansson was last seen in, Chicago police said.
Jansson disappeared on March 9, 2001 when he was 21, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office will use DNA to help positively identify the remains, police said, adding a positive identification will not be made “anytime soon.”
“We are hopeful we will be able to provide some closure to his family, who has been missing a loved one for nearly 12 years,” the statement said.
The Chicago Police Department’s Marine Unit used sonar technology to locate the car.
