WINNETKA — Three men have been charged with armed robbery involving a air-powered pellet gun.

Patrick M. Shane, 20, of 5428 Washington St., Morton Grove, Nicholas S. LaPaglia, 22, of 5428 Washington St., Morton Grove, and Daniel E. Shaver, 39, of 8541 N. Lotus Ave., Skokie, were arrested at 1:46 a.m. Jan. 5 and charged with three counts each of aggravated robbery after a 911 call was made about a robbery in progress.

According to police, two of the men allegedly displayed a pistol and ordered three 19-year-old local men to give up their wallets and phones in the area of Locust and Pine Streets.

After taking property from the victims the suspects ran to a waiting SUV, driven by the third offender, police said.

“One suspect brandished what looked like to these victims a handgun,” said Winnetka Deputy Police Chief Joe Pellus. “The suspects ended up fleeing with a wallet and a cell phone.”

A 911 call was made providing a description of the offenders, their vehicle and last known direction of travel. Winnetka police, assisted by Northfield police, stopped an SUV matching the description of the offender’s vehicle shortly after the crime.

“The property of the victims was located in the SUV,” Pellus said.

After a lengthy foot search, a modified Air Soft pistol was located in the area.

“(The pistol) was certainly modified,” Pellus said. “The safety orange tip was colored in dark to match the color of the weapon to look like a firearm.”

Shane, LaPaglia and Shaver were held on $50,000 cash bonds and were scheduled to appear in court Jan. 8.
