Find out why variety is the spice of life by enrolling in continuing education classes offered through the Oakton Alliance for Lifelong Learning.
Networking Essentials (NTS A05-C01) — Learn the fundamentals of electronic data communications with emphasis on creating a local area network (LAN). Sixteen-week course meets 6-9:30 p.m. Mondays starting Aug. 20 at Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave. Course fee is $321.
Introduction to Facilities Management and Engineering (FAC A26-C01) — Gain an overview of practice and skills needed for facilities management and facilities engineering. Sixteen-week course meets 6-9 p.m. Mondays starting Aug. 20 at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. Course fee is $281.
Computer Software and Concepts: Office 2010, Visio, PhotoShop, and Web Page Development (CPT A01-C01) — Intended for students seeking careers as Information Technology professionals, this course introduces businesses application software and fundamental concepts of computer hardware. Sixteen-week course meets 11 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting Aug. 20. Course fee is $405.
Introduction to Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (AIR A06-C01) — This course consists of lectures, demonstration and lab experiences in the area of basic refrigeration, theory and practice. Sixteen-week course meets 5-10:30 p.m. Mondays starting Aug. 20 at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. Course fee is $415.
First Aid (FIT B11-C01) — Investigate accident prevention and procedures to be followed in case of accident or sudden illness. Standard American Red Cross Certificate awarded upon successful completion. Eight-week course meets 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Aug. 21 at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. Course fee is $198.

National accreditation renewed
The National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals, recently reconfirmed accreditation of the Early Childhood Education Center at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. The accreditation is valid through 2017, the NAEYC’s maximum of five years.
To earn NAEYC accreditation, Oakton’s ECE Center went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 NAEYC early-childhood program standards and more than 400 related accreditation criteria. Oakton’s program received NAEYC accreditation after an on-site visit by NAEYC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the 10 program standards. NAEYC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits.
In the 25 years since NAEYC accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early-childhood education. More than 7,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC — approximately 8 percent of all preschools and other early-childhood programs.
Established in 1972, the Des Plaines facility (1600 E. Golf Road) provides full-day programs for 2- to 5-year olds. The center also serves as a lab for ECE academic students who are completing their teacher preparation requirements.
